You know that AT&T TV commercial for the new Mobile Share Value plan for unlimited talk and text for $45/month?  The customer asks, “What’s the catch?” and the salesperson says “There is no catch.”  There is a big catch – the $45 doesn’t include a phone. A new iPhone 5S from AT&T will cost you $650. If you choose to buy it on installments, your monthly bill soars to $77.50 a month. And, by the way, the data plan in question limits you to 300 megabytes of data a month.

FreedomPop has declared war on the carriers, on behalf of consumers who are tired of getting exploited.  This week they launched a new plan that provides unlimited data and voice for $4.58 a month.  To put that into context, if you were to buy the equivalent plan on AT&T for one month, you could have gotten two years of service with FreedomPop.  That’s a huge difference.

So is this the reason that AT&T and others are lowering their prices?  To compete with the underdog gaining the headlines?  Maybe so.

Here are some print and online reports.  There were over 80 broadcast stories today alone.
